A new 3D-printed housing project, known as Project Milestone, is currently underway in the Netherlands, with some of the units going on the market as early as mid-2019.

The project, which includes five homes, located in a natural setting in Eindhoven, was built with sustainability and energy-efficiency in mind—the first house will be just over 1,000 square feet with walls just under 2 inches thick.

According to Digital Trends, Project Milestone will serve as a focal point of Bosrijk, a sculpture garden in the city. The first house will be printed offsite and assembled on location, serving as an example for the other homes to follow.

“These homes express the freedom of shapes,” said Rudy van Gurp, a project manager at Van Wijnen, the construction company behind Project Milestone. “It is a high-end design to let the world know that everything is possible.”

By the time the fifth home is completed, the team hopes the printer will also be used to produce drainage pipes and other necessary installations. Using 3D printing to produce housing also allows designers to place wireless sensors in the walls of the homes, making the structure truly “smart.” All the homes will have conventionally built foundations.

“We like the look of the houses at the moment as this is an innovation and it is a very futuristic design,” said van Gurp. “But we are already looking to a take a step further and people will be able to design their own homes and then print them out. People will be able to make their homes suit them, [personalize] them, and make them more aesthetically pleasing.”

Van Gurp also believes 3D printers in home construction will be mainstream within the next five years, which can contribute to less concrete being used in construction.

The project manager also added that permits still had yet to be acquired, “and the houses will be built in line with all Dutch housing regulations.” Calculations have been made, but real-life testing remains.

The homes will be rented out by real estate company Vesteda.
