Global coatings firm PPG (Pittsburgh) announced last week that it has entered into a partnership with Oslo-based global quality-assurance company DNV GL to further its study of hull performance and develop new marine coatings.

Under the agreement, announced Thursday (June 7), DNV GL will assist PPG in collecting and analyzing data that will allow the coatings supplier to better understand how hull performance affects fuel efficiency in maritime shipping and the impact hull coatings can have.

PPG's Tom Molenda, left, and DNV GL's George Dimopolous announced the new partnership last week at Posidonia 2018 in Athens.

The companies say they hope to find innovations that will take hull performance beyond ISO 19030, the standard published last year on hull and propeller performance.

“DNV GL and PPG have identified a market demand for methodologies that go beyond ISO 19030 and share a common vision to develop future requirements and solutions that enable optimum vessel performance,” said Tom Molenda, PPG’s Global Marine director. “Our goal is to enhance hull efficiency for multiple operational profiles and optimize vessel performance.”

According to DNV GL, the firm has access to real-time performance information from more than 1,900 vessels, which can be used to help PPG in its efforts to develop new marine coatings.

The announcement was made in Athens, at Posidonia 2018, the International Shipping Exhibition, presented by the Union of Greek Shipowners.
