The 2018 International Bridge Conference, presented by the Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania, begins Monday (June 11) at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center, in National Harbor, Maryland, and will feature technical sessions and exhibitors related to bridge engineering and maintenance.

The Delaware River Turnpike Bridge is the subject of a session Tuesday afternoon.

The Delaware River Turnpike Bridge, which underwent a major emergency repair in early 2017 when a steel member was found to have cracked completely in two, and the Delaware Memorial Bridge, which was subject to anchorage cracking later the same year, both play heavily into the program this year. The turnpike bridge is the subject of an entire technical session Tuesday afternoon, with lectures on repairs, testing and investigation related to the failure.

Two sessions Wednesday will explore bridge preservation, with lectures on projects including the recently finished Longfellow Bridge rehabilitation in Boston, the rehabilitation of the miles-long Pulaski Skyway in New Jersey and the rehab of Philadelphia's Frankford Avenue Bridge—the oldest bridge in the U.S.

During the Wednesday afternoon preservation session, Ali Akbar Sohanghpurwala of CONCORR Inc., Adam Matteo of Virginia DOT and Rex Gilley of WSP will speak on the development of a corrosion-mitigation strategy for the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel.

The keynote session of the conference will take place Monday from 10:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., featuring:

  • Conference chair Ronnie Medlock;
  • John W. Fisher, Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering and Director Emeritus of the ATLSS Engineering Research Center at Lehigh University;
  • Xigang Zhang, vice president of China Highway & Transportation Society and chief engineer of China Communications Construction Company;
  • James Whitty, partner, D’Artagnan Consulting; and
  • James Ray, senior adviser to the secretary for infrastructure, U.S. Department of Transportation.
