Awards and Honors

Boyd won the Honorary Life Member award for 2012 from the Board of Governors of SSPC—the Society's highest award, given in recognition of lifetime achievement. Boyd was one of 24 individuals to receive Clive Hare Honors, awarded to thought leaders who have advanced the technology of protective and marine coatings in the past decade and showcased in the JPCL special issue “Top Thinkers,” in August 2012.

In 2010 Boyd received the John D. Keane Award of Merit; acknowledging outstanding leadership and significant contribution to the development of the protective coatings industry and to SSPC. (John D. Keane served SSPC as its executive director from 1957 to 1984). In 2007 he received the SSPC Education Award for exceptional contribution to the coatings industry; in 2004 he received the “Who’s Who in Construction” award given by the Birmingham Business Journal, to top business leaders in the Birmingham Metro Area; and in 1994 and again in 2009, Boyd was given the Good Guy award by the Industrial Painting Committee of SSPC.

Boyd developed a training program for painters that formed the basis of the one used today by District Council 77 of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT), which includes the southeastern states of Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. He is a founding member of the committee that established SSPC’s Painting Contractor Certification Program in 1986. Boyd participated in SSPC’s Workforce Summit as a member of its Education Program Advisory Committee and was a participant in SSPC’s Strategic Planning Survey.

He has written multiple articles for JPCL, including “How CAS Training Fits into Shop Painting in the Future,” (September 2012) and “Radical Change: The Past 25 Years in the Coatings Industry,” (August 2009).

About the Awards

The PaintSquare Prestige Awards are divided into three major categories: Top People, Top Innovations and Top Products. Each category includes a series of awards for people working in a given capacity and for products that fulfill a given role on a protective coatings project.

With a focus on the professionals who make the industry work and the coatings and equipment that are used every day in the field, the program is accepting nominations through June 15. Nominations for people are at no cost.

Voting will commence after the publication of the fall issue of PaintSquare Press, in which nominees will be listed; winners will be announced in the winter issue of PSP.
