In honor of world-renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the Illinois Office of Tourism has designated a trail that connects 13 structures designed by the architect, running as far north as Rockford and as far south as Springfield.

All 13 structures on the trail are open to the public. Some buildings of note include Frank Lloyd Wright’s private residence and studio and the Unity Temple.

Those interested in traveling the trail can visit the tourism website to find information on self-guided itineraries, such as the 110-mile road trip from Chicago to Rockford that also stops in Oak Park, Geneva, Hampshire and Belvidere.

According to the Chicago Tribune, the trail will be marked with brown signs with a white font and geometric design evocative of Wright’s work; the signs will be installed later this summer.

Illinois Office of Tourism Director Cory Jobe noted that the rollout of the trail is part of a move to build on the attention garnered last year, when the 150th anniversary of Wright’s birth renewed focus on his work.

“The idea is to get visitors excited about Frank Lloyd Wright architecture and get them moving from Point A to Point B, with the ultimate goal of having them spend more dollars in Illinois and putting heads in the beds of our communities,” Jobe told the Tribune.

Other buildings to be found on the trail include: the Emil Bach House, the Charnley-Persky House Museum, The Rookery, the Frederick C. Robie house, the Colonel George Fabyan Villa, Muirhead Farmhouse, Petit Memorial Chapel, Kenneth Laurent House, B. Harley Bradley House, Frank L. Smith Bank and the Dana-Thomas House.

“Interest in Frank Lloyd Wright seems to be growing, and the trail will be an even greater incentive for people to come to Illinois,” said President and CEO of the Frank Lloyd Wright Trust Celeste Adams.
