The nomination window for the inaugural PaintSquare Prestige Awards continues through June 15, and as applications flow in, PaintSquare Daily News is profiling each of the seven expert judges who will adjudicate the Top Products and Top Innovations categories of the program. This week's featured judge is Chip Stein.

Gregory R. “Chip” Stein, PE, managing principal of Tank Industry Consultants, joined the company in 1988. Over his tenure, Stein has been involved in more than 10,000 tank engineering projects, ranging from new tank design and construction to tank evaluations, tank rehabilitation projects and tank demolition.

Gregory R. “Chip” Stein, PE, managing principal of Tank Industry Consultants, has been involved in more than 10,000 tank engineering projects.

A graduate of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering, Stein’s area of concentration was structural and material analysis. He obtained his MBA from Indiana University and is a registered professional engineer in 36 states.

Stein maintains leadership roles in a number of industry standards-making organizations, serving as chair or vice-chair of seven AWWA committees; he is also a chapter author for AWWA M42 Steel Water Storage Tanks and Steel Water Storage Tanks Handbook; on the board of directors of the Steel Tank Institute/Steel Plate Fabricators Association (STI/SPFA); immediate past chair, STI/SPFA Field-Erected Steel Tank Committee; principal member, NFPA 22: Standard for Water Tanks for Private Fire Protection; principal member or two NFPA committees, and tutorial and conference chair, SSPC.

As managing principal for TIC, Stein is responsible for scheduling and overseeing work conducted by the company’s staff of civil, mechanical, chemical and structural engineers. He reviews engineering designs, specifications, reports and client invoicing, and is responsible for contract administration duties performed for TIC’s clients. He also supervises TIC’s continual development and refinement of environmental and safety information, procedures, and training.

Stein has authored a number of papers and articles that have been featured in industry publications—including JPCL—often presenting case studies on significant water tank projects.

He has been actively involved in youth football for nearly 20 years, coached high school varsity football for nine years and is currently head coach and general manager of the local fifth- and sixth-grade league, which prepares players to compete at the junior high and high school levels.

About the Awards
The PaintSquare Prestige Awards are divided into three major categories: Top People, Top Innovations and Top Products. Each category includes a series of awards for people working in a given capacity and for products that fulfill a given role on a protective coatings project.
With a focus on the professionals who make the industry work and the coatings and equipment that are used every day in the field, the program is accepting nominations through June 15. Nominations for people are at no cost.
Voting will commence after the publication of the fall issue of PaintSquare Press, in which nominees will be listed; winners will be announced in the winter issue of PSP.
