The second span of the new Goethals Bridge, connecting Staten Island with Elizabeth, New Jersey, is set to open today (May 21), marking the end of four years of construction on the first new bridge opened by the New York-New Jersey Port Authority in over 80 years.

The first span of the new Goethals, which crosses the Arthur Kill, opened last June, allowing for the demolition of the old steel cantilever structure, which had stood since 1928. The old bridge's main span was dismantled in January.

The new twin cable-stayed spans will carry a total of six 12-foot lanes of traffic plus a bicycle-pedestrian lane. The design includes space for an additional transit lane to be added later if necessary.

The twin spans are being built through a public-private partnership, by a joint venture called NYNJ Link Developer LLC, created by Macquarie Infrastructure and Real Assets, and Kiewit Infrastructure. The joint venture designed, financed and is constructing the spans, and will be responsible for their maintenance for their first 35 years. Some of the funding acquired by the joint venture came through federal financing.

The Port Authority will rent the spans from the joint venture for 35 years, then will take full ownership of the bridge. Tolls will be collected by the Port Authority.

The new Goethals is part of a wave of cable-stayed spans erected in and around New York City in recent years; the new Kosciuszko Bridge, opened last year, was the first major cable-stayed bridge to go up in the city, and the Cuomo Bridge (replacing the old Tappan Zee) and Goethals have followed suit.
