A Dallas construction company recently made headlines when it reported that the use of iPads in the field has saved the company an estimated $1.8 million a year.

The firm's Todd Wynne said that savings from several areas added up to the figure, including:

  • As estimated $10,000 per project saved by eliminating printing costs;
  • An estimated 7 percent of costs on each project saved by eliminating mistakes made when crews work off outdated documents; and
  • An estimated 55,000 employee hours saved because workers have documents at their fingertips instead of needing to go to an onsite trailer to check a reference.

The company says it introduced the use of the iPads about five years ago, and has since bought approximately 300 iPads and Apple has since asked Wynne to teach seminars on incorporated the technology into the work environment.

Tech in Construction

A McKinsey Global Institute report from 2017 noted that the construction industry has moved “at a glacial pace” in terms of digitizing its workflow.

However, over the past year the industry has seen a number of pushes in tech, a lot based in augmented reality.

For customers, The Sherwin-Williams Company is the latest to update an app that allows the user to browse different paints and coatings options in real time, before they even pick up a paint brush.

Technology firm DAQRI entered an agreement last summer to manufacture its Smart Glasses, with the goal of allowing construction workers to essentially see inside walls and ceilings. (At the time of that announcement, a trial run had already begun with Mortenson Construction.)

“For the construction industry, we see it as a needed disrupter to resolve a wide range of business problems, such as increasing safety awareness for the field crew related to just-in-time knowledge,” said Mortenson’s Senior Director of Project Solutions Ricardo Khan at the time. “As a downstream value, our customers can leverage AR to dramatically improve operating and maintaining their facility.”
