Dutch studio UNStudio was recently announced as the winner of a competition to design a multi-use bridge that is set to cross the Danube River in Budapest. The span will connect the Ujbuda and Csepel areas in the south, and act as a gateway to the city itself.

Working in collaboration with engineer Buro Happold to create the design, UNStudio planned a cable-stayed structure with a main span of 721 feet, located between two 298-foot-tall triangular pylons.

Paired with the side spans, the bridge will be around 1,640 feet and will carry four lanes for vehicular traffic—two going in each direction—two tram lines and two lanes for bikes and foot traffic. Acting as a symbol for the area developing south of Budapest, the bridge will also serve as a spot for unobstructed views.

"It was also important that the bridge enable unobstructed views below and above the bridge deck. We wanted it to operate as a clear gateway to the city, like an inviting gesture of hands," said UNStudio founder Ben van Berkel.

The international bridge design competition was the first of its kind in Hungary in over 120 years, according to the firm. Knight Architects and Zaha Hadid Architects were among the 17 competition entrants.

According to the jury, which offered UNStudio the project, the firm’s entry was “the most well thought-out.”

“The bridge would be both an architectural and cityscape symbol, but is simultaneously a traditional and functional bridge structure that does not impinge on its environment,” the jury said.

“The coherent design and lighting of the gates and piers make for an elegant evening view, worthy of a Budapest bridge. The form factor of the abutments meshes well with the structure. […] With its deck structure, suspended from pylons inclined towards the end spans and bent backwards along the top, this bridge is statically one of the best designed proposals.”
