Bjarke Ingels: New NYC Towers Will 'Dance'

In late April, Bjarke Ingels Group released renderings for two new skyscrapers that are set to “dance” on New York City’s skyline, with each building designed with consideration for the views of the other. Construction is slated for completion in just over a year.

The XI development—also known as The Eleventh—is currently shouldering its way up between Chelsea and the Meatpacking District, set to eventually become its own neighborhood.

Dancing Skyscrapers

Working in conjunction with HFZ Capital Group, BIG designed each tower to look as if its twisting away from the other. BIG founder Bjarke Ingels noted that the structures “almost care for each other and enhance each other's situations."

The 26-story “X” tower will house 87 luxury residences above a hotel, with the 36-story “I” tower containing 149 condominiums. Residents of both buildings share amenities on the third floor.

The external walls are clad in travertine, framing floor-to-ceiling portions of glazing. In higher floors, windows “migrate” to the adjacent facades as the building shape warps. Ingels added that “the best way to inhabit a site might be completely different on the ground than it is on the 10th floor; than it is on the 20th floor.”

As the day progresses, “kinks” in the stone cladding create shifting shadows across the buildings.

"As the light travels over the facade, you [will] really see that rotation very clearly because the limestone is illuminated differently," Ingels said. "All the stones are straight, but it creates these reveals that will draw shadows down."

The complex will also house a cultural building, according to reports, with both towers connected by a bridge. Plans also include a central courtyard.

According to Curbed NY, Gabbelini Sheppard worked on the interiors of the “I” tower, and Gilles and Boissier designed the hotel in the “X” tower, as well as the condos above.

Apartments in the XI complex range from one bedrooms to four—one-bedroom units start at $2.8 million, with four bedrooms going up to $9 million. Half-floor penthouses cost $25 million. Sales launched May 7.

Construction is slated for completion in the last quarter of 2019.
