A new formula for a plant-based resin for use on exterior doors is making the rounds at design and trade shows as the coating was recently used for the first time, on a recycled door to boot.

Recently on display at both Milan’s Design Week and German facade convention FensterBaun 2018, the brainchild of Netherlands-based companies DSM and Weekamp Deuren (which works with 100 percent green or sustainable wood), along with PPG (Pittsburgh)—known as Decovery—is aiming to provide a green and sustainable way to protect doors from the elements.

The Resin/Research

DSM’s Decovery replaced the fossil-based binders that are typically found in standard waterborne coatings, the company says, with the goal of maintaining the coating’s quality and performance.

"Decovery resins reduce the carbon footprint, without sacrificing the performance of the paint," said DSM in a statement. "We're on our way to creating completely natural paint resin, and it's here where our counterparts in the design industry can really help."

To make the resin, DSM extracts sugars, starches and oils from trees and agricultural waste through biomass conversion. Currently, 50 percent of the resin is derived from plants, though the goal is to hit 100 percent.

"To make our dream a reality we need everyone who uses paint—from designers to manufacturers to painters themselves and everyone in between—to come together to fuel this movement towards more sustainable plant-based finishes," continued DSM.

The companies claim that the Weekamp/DSM partnership has resulted in the first exterior recycled door with a plant-based coating.
