PA Developer Seeks to Remove Falcon Nest

A Pennsylvania developer is facing opposition from the skies regarding a luxury apartment development in downtown Pittsburgh.

Triblive.com reports that BET Investments (Horsham, Pennsylvania) has asked permission from the government to remove four peregrine falcons, which are about two weeks old, from their nest on the building in question on Third Avenue.

Peregrines, which are endangered, have been nesting in downtown Pittsburgh for 25 years. The parent birds, known as Dori and Louie, laid the eggs in March. Now that construction on the luxury student apartments is in full swing, there have been reports that the birds are diving at construction workers while they’re on the roof.

Although a peregrine’s nest is protected, exemptions can be made by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The Trib reports that in a letter sent last Friday from the game commission to local peregrine monitors, the organizations said it is working with the wildlife service on the request and said it is “within the parameters of the existing laws.”

However, it also noted that the health and well-being of the chicks is the primary interest.

The request to move the birds is causing an uproar, mostly because within 30 days the chicks will be leaving the nest on their own. On top of that, moving the nest or putting the birds in the hands of a wildlife rehabilitation center might not stop Dori and Louie from diving at workers.

Neither the developer nor the game commission have commented on the matter.

Editor's Note: This story was edited at 8:30 a.m., May 1, to clarify that the peregrine falcons are endangered.
