VT Halter Marine, a shipbuilding and repair firm serving commercial and government clients, officially opened a new $10 million blasting and painting facility at its Pascagoula, Mississippi, shipyard Friday (April 6).

Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Mississippi, spoke at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, where the company touted the new building’s modern technology and environmentally friendly aspects. The entire blasting and painting process will be done in two parts of the same building, making for easier debris containment and climate control.

VT Halter Marine officially opened a new $10 million blasting and painting facility at its Pascagoula, Mississippi, shipyard Friday.

"The installation of this new blast and paint facility is to incorporate cutting-edge technologies in our marine construction programs,” said VT Halter Marine CEO Rob Mullins. “We are now able to apply a diverse range of protective coatings regardless of the weather conditions."

Facility Specs

The main area of the building is 304 feet by 120 feet, according to the company, and smaller adjacent areas are designed for blasting and painting smaller parts. The facility has blast media recycling equipment to enable reuse of abrasives.

Ship sections as big as 105 feet by 80 feet by 40 feet high can be processed through the facility.

VT Halter, a company of Vision Technologies Systems Inc., builds and repairs patrol boats and oceanographic vessels as well as smaller defense support vessels for the U.S. government, and various kinds of vessels, from tugs and barges to ferries and smaller cruise vessels, for private clients.

The shipyard recently announced it has begun construction of the United States’ first liquefied natural gas articulated tug and barge unit.
