Arizona State University doctoral researchers Sudhanshu Singh and Tyler Stannard recently received an award from the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society for their work strengthening the structural materials the military relies on.

Singh and Stannard worked with Nikhilesh Chawla, a Fulton Professor of materials science and engineering at ASU, in his Center for 4D Materials Science. The team also worked with the Advanced Photon Source facility at Argonne National Laboratory in Lemont, Illinois, where they collaborated with physicist Xianghui Xiao.

The team’s research, focused on aluminum alloys such as those used on large ships and aircraft, was funded by the Office of Naval Research, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research and through the U.S. Department of Defense Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative.

Arizona State University doctoral researchers Sudhanshu Singh and Tyler Stannard recently received an award from the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society for their work strengthening the structural materials which the military relies on.

Chawla noted that the research provided valuable new insight into corrosion triggered by environmental factors, such as the effects of salt water on the metals used for sea vessels. The project also involved advanced X-ray microtomography and focused ion beam techniques that served to probe the fundamental structures and characteristics of materials.

In Situ X-ray Microtomography of Stress Corrosion Cracking and Corrosion Fatigue” was published in the Journal of Materials, with the award presented at the TMS Annual Meeting in Phoenix on March 12.

“They’ve done great work on metal corrosion research. They’ve provided new knowledge to help us better understand how it happens, how to deal with it and how to design new materials that are more resistant to it,” said Chawla.

Singh graduated from ASU last summer and is now an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur. Stannard graduated in December, and is now working for KLA-Tencor Corporation, a leading developer of inspection and metrology technologies for semiconductor and related nanoelectronics.
