Design elements for the new Las Vegas stadium were released late last week while the final costs for the project were cemented at $1.8 billion.

The future home of the National Football League’s current Oakland Raiders is still set for completion in August 2020 and officials stress that everything is going according to plan.

Design elements for the new Las Vegas stadium were released late last week while the final costs for the project were cemented at $1.8 billion.

“Everything is on time and there is a lot of activity on the site,” Raiders President Marc Badain said. “We’re almost done with excavation, and we have a cement batch on site now.”

Plans & Features

Last week, the Las Vegas Stadium Authority met to finalize financial documents that will be put before Clark County Commissioners next week, on April 3. The $1.8 billion is coming from a variety of sources: $200 million from an NFL loan program, $850 million from the Raiders and $750 million of public funding.

Officials say that the vast majority of that price tag—$1.39 billion—is going toward construction, with Mortenson Construction and McCarthy Building Cos. serving as general contractors on the job.

And the results of that construction are now a little clearer as officials also revealed several design plans during the meeting including:

  • The ceiling will be made of an ethylene tetrafluoroethylene high-strength translucent polymer, which will let in natural light while keeping heat down at the same time;
  • Translucent stadium components around the building envelope will give stadium a black appearance during the day but allow the inside lights to be visible from the outside at night;
  • Envelope ribbons will serve as ventilation and drain water from the roof; and
  • The north end of the stadium is slated to feature folding 80-by-120-foot lanai doors that open to a view of the Las Vegas Strip.

“This will truly be a first-class sports and entertainment facility, designed with the other 355 potential events days in a the front of our minds,” said Don Webb, chief operating officer for the Las Vegas Stadium Co.
