North Dakota-based resin manufacturer Renuvix LLC was one of the latest recipients of a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency for its development of an isocyanate-free polyurethane resin, which can be used in the development of coatings such as oil-based paints and wood stains.

The Small Business Innovation Research Phase II grants, follow-ups from their Phase I counterparts, were given by the EPA to six small businesses—Renuvix LLC being one of them—for the development of technologies that provided sustainable solutions to environmental issues.

Isocyanate-Free Resin

In Phase I of product development and research, Renuvix created sixteen non-isocyanate bio-based polyurethane resins for one-component, ambient-cure coatings. As a result, novel urethane-functional resins could be produced free of isocyanates while proving useful for one-component, ambient-cured coatings.

Renuvix’s research also revealed that NUF resins could be used to overcome a major limitation in OCAC resins: the ability to reduce the level of solvent in the coating without sacrificing coating performance characteristics, such as drying and curing time, and durability. NUF resins provide OCACs with lower levels of air pollutants while also being known for their high bio-based content.

According to the EPA, coatings with high bio-based content are both better for the environment and use U.S. dependency on fossil fuels.

Phase II of Renuvix’s $300,000 contract began on Feb. 1, and will last through Jan. 31, 2020.

Other winners of the SBIR Phase II grants include XploSafe LLC, for economic recovery and reuse of nutrients from wastewater.
