Nottingham, England-based architecture firm 2hD Workshop had a noise problem it needed to clean up in its home office. The solution: A small, satellite office space outside in the garden—with a facade made of broom heads.

Named “Mission Control,” the group replaced a structure that was already in the back garden and decided it would serve as a retreat-like office for when the open floor-plan of the house got a bit too communal.

“We designed ‘Mission Control’ as a sort of antithesis of ‘the contemplation space with landscape views and flowing inside-outside space,’” the group said on its website.

“We needed a cell, removed from physical context and worldly distraction, where we could retreat to immerse ourselves in brain work. Our intention was that the building should create three totally separate experiences: an enigmatic exterior, a serene interior and a ceremonial commute to work.”

The Design

The group wanted a façade that would allow for the space to remain relatively hidden and would also be a safe exterior as children often played in the garden. They landed on 546 interlocking broom heads.

The brooms were locally sourced, and entry to the building requires finding the “secret broom head” that slides away to reveal the lock and key to the door.

The office is just 75 square feet and though there are nowwindows, there is one large skylight, which provides sufficient natural light for the interior.

The team prefabricated 13 timber panels for the structure and used six inches of sheep’s wool as the insulation. The minimalist interior is clad in whitewashed plywood.
