Francis Scott Key Bridge Span Coating Contract Awarded

The Maryland Transportation Authority has awarded a contract to Manolis Painting Co. in the amount of $6,675,000 for the cleaning and coating of approach spans on the Francis Scott Key Bridge, located in Baltimore, Maryland.

Manolis Painting Co. will clean and coat approach spans to the Francis Scott Key Bridge, in Baltimore, on a $6.7 million contract.

Manolis Painting was the lowest of nine bidders. Additional bidders included:

  • Alpha Painting & Construction Co. Inc., in the amount of $7,254,388;
  • Klicos Painting Company Inc., in the amount of $8,687,620;
  • Blastech Enterprises Inc., in the amount of $9,160,000;
  • Saffo Contractors Inc., in the amount of $9,250,000;
  • Titan Industrial Services, in the amount of $9,839,000;
  • Olympus Painting Contracotrs Inc., in the amount of $11,472,200;
  • Atsalis Brothers Painting, in the amount of $14,416,000; and
  • Abhe & Svoboda Inc., in the amount of $21,876,770.

Scope of Work

The contractor will oversee cleaning and coating of approach spans and structural steel members on the Francis Scott Key Bridge, constructed in 1972. The dual-span drawbridge and approaches reach a total of 10.9 miles in length.

The contractor will perform preparation and coating of bearing areas and structural steel members. The steel will require abrasive blast-cleaning to a Near White (SSPC-SP 10) standard and coating with the MDSHA System C, which consists of an organic zinc-rich primer, an epoxy intermediate, and a urethane finish.

Owner-approved manufacturers for structural steel liquid coatings include Baril Coatings, Carboline, International Protective Coatings, PPG, Sherwin-Williams, TNEMEC and Wasser. The project also includes 4,690 square feet of protective coating of concrete surfaces.

The existing coatings contain lead. Class 1A containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 is required. SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certifications are also required. MDSHA personnel will perform coatings inspections services.
