The Associated General Contractors recently released its Construction Risk Partners Build America Grand Awards, giving the top honor to Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The joint venture of Holder Construction Company, Hunt Construction Group, H.J. Russell & Company and C.D. Moody Construction Company—along with more than 30 steel fabricators and 40 design firms—achieved LEED Platinum status in November and now has been officially dubbed the most significant construction project of 2017. The project also received the award for the best building project over $100 million.

“These awards epitomize the latest and greatest projects the construction industry has to offer,” said Art Daniel, the association's president and president of AR Daniel Construction Services in Cedar Hill, Texas.

“The construction firms recognized have utilized outstanding skill, collaboration and innovation to complete some of America's most complex and ambitious projects of 2017.”

The Project

Led by design firm HOK (St. Louis), the 2-million-square-foot, $1.5 billion stadium acquired 88 points to achieve the LEED Platinum milestone—the first sports stadium in North American to do so.

The structure is best known, though, for its one-of-a-kind retractable roof that delayed the completion of the stadium multiple times.

HOK

Led by design firm HOK (St. Louis), the 2-million-square-foot, $1.5 billion stadium acquired 88 points to achieve the LEED Platinum milestone—the first sports stadium in North American to do so.

The structure of the roof consists of eight metal panels—or “petals”—that open simultaneously in under 10 minutes, and was designed by HOK in collaboration with tvsdesign, Goode Van Slyke Architecture and Stanley Beaman & Sears.

The stadium can expand to 80,000 seats for marquee events and features a 59-foot halo video board.

“The Construction Risk Partners Build America Awards recipients represent the perfect integration of creative design, construction mastery and flawless execution which is inspiring to us all,” said Rob Rapp of Construction Risk Partners. “CRP and JLT would like to congratulate all of the award winners and nominees for their amazing ingenuity, perseverance and accomplishment on their respective projects."
