The inaugural Architecture & Design Film Festival kicked off in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday (Feb. 22), marking the commencement of the nation’s largest festival geared toward the creative spirit behind constructed spaces.

Over four days, the festival displayed films that explored the life and works of iconic architects such as Rem Koolhaas and Bjarke Ingels, and delved into topics including design for positive social change.

Opening night featured a showing of BIG TIME, a documentary focused on Ingels and his firm. In the film, director Kaspar Astrup Schröder follows Ingels over the course of six years as he takes on his largest project yet: the creation of VIA 57 and then getting the commission for the new 2 World Trade Center.

The National Building Museum served as the venue for festivities, which ended Feb. 25.

REM, created by Rem Koolhaas’s son, digs into the architect's life, working methods and philosophy. The movie also investigates how structures influence those who live and work in them.

Oher films shown during the festival included Building Hope: The Maggie’s Centres, an exploration of one woman’s cancer diagnosis and how that led her to design more life-changing cancer centers; and Workplace, a look into how offices function, how they can be better designed and whether or not they will be necessary in the future.

ADFF: D.C. was presented by the Revada Foundation, which is known for sponsoring the arts and social justice causes primarily in the D.C. area. The National Building Museum served as the venue for festivities, which ended Feb. 25.
