The Federal Railroad Administration announced late last week that applications are being accepted for $73 million in grant funding for projects geared toward strengthening intercity passenger rail, supporting capital projects and boosting safety initiatives.

Funding has been made available through new grant programs that are expected to boost a variety of rail projects, including the potential for implementing positive train control, improving highway-rail grade crossings and mitigating congestion, among others.

The Federal Railroad Administration announced late last week that applications are being accepted for $73 million in grant funding for projects geared toward strengthening intercity passenger rail, supporting capital projects and boosting safety initiatives.

Funds will be issued through the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements grant program and the Restoration and Enhancement Grants program.

According to the FRA, 25 percent ($17 million) of CRISI’s $68 million in funding will be used for rural projects like highway-rail grade crossing improvement projects, with $10 million being left available for capital projects including rail line relocation and improvement, or grade separation projects that contribute to the safety of intercity passenger rail service. Another portion of funding—$2.2 million intended for special transportation circumstances—will go toward grants pertaining to freight or intercity passenger rail capital projects in Alaska, South Dakota and Wyoming.

“These grants are important resources in the Department’s ongoing efforts to strengthen our Nation’s overall rail systems, deploy positive train control and improve highway-rail grade crossings,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Elaine L. Chao.
