A New York woman has created a business brick by LEGO brick.

Shari Austrian, owner of Little Brick Lane, has constructed a place for herself in the niche market of building replicas of people’s homes using Legos.

During an interview with ABC, Austrian said that it started when she and her husband began building a house in the suburbs. Their two children were nervous about the move, so she began constructing what was happening with their actual home in real time with sets of Legos.

“I wanted to make the experience even more special for my kids,” Austrian said. “I thought it would be special to create a small model of our home with Legos as we were watching our house being built.”

When the 30,000-piece replica of the family’s 3,400-square-foot home was done, friends and family started to ask her to make one for them. And the rest is history.

Now, she works part-time for the architect who built their family home in addition to her Little Brick Lane Etsy business.

Her creations sell at a baseline $2,500 and take her about 10 weeks to complete.

“I don’t know how many people are comfortable considering a Lego structure a piece of art, but I do,” she said. “A lot of people say, ‘I’m not going to spend that much money on Legos,' so it’s really a niche market that I’m just hoping to reach out to and bring some joy to.”

She designs off of architectural plans and photos, either only constructing the exterior or doing a replica of the entire house inside and out.

She says she started with the standard Lego base plate and builds up and out, with things like the stairs and roof lines to be the most challenging.

“When you do figure out a solution it’s mind-blowing, like, ‘This really works,’” she said. “There are just endless options.”
