Bridge Takes a Ride in OK

We're used to a roadway that crosses over a bridge, but a bridge that drives down the road—that's an unusual occurrence. But it's exactly what happened this past weekend, when contractors moved two truss spans, each weighing 2 million pounds, into place over I-235 in Oklahoma.

Bridge move

Crews moved two spans weighing 2 million pounds each into place over I-235 in Oklahoma last week.

The bridge spans, which will be part of a BNSF railroad line, were constructed about a quarter-mile from the site of installation, and were rolled up a road to the spot where they were to be placed over the interstate. The work was planned for the weekend of Jan. 20 but was called off due to weather concerns.

The twin spans were built and assembled by crews from Allen Contracting and American Bridge, using accelerated bridge construction methods that limited closures of the interstate to just 60 hours, rather than the months of closures that would have been necessary using more traditional construction methods.

The move was part of the $88 million I-235 renovation project, which will continue for another year. The Oklahoma Department of Transportation, which says 700 people watched the big move in person along with 17,000 more viewing live online, provided a video of the move and the installation, viewable below.
