WSDOT Investigates Concrete on Spokane Bridge

The Washington State Department of Transportation recently began investigating reports of concrete falling off of a retaining wall along the Hamilton Street overpass located in Spokane, Washington.

According to local news station KHQ, a pedestrian safety fence and decorative capstones that line the top of the wall have come down along the offramp of I-90 that directs traffic toward the Gonzaga University Campus and the Spokane River.

Concrete Conundrum

WSDOT theorizes that years of freezing and thawing ice in the soil contributed to one of the capstones falling, while the weight of another capstone and the chain link fence atop the overpass were what caused the other capstones to fall.

The highway itself has not been damaged.

Currently, crews are working to stabilize a capstone in order to remove the hanging fence, but plans to replace the capstones have yet to be established.

Authorities discovered the crumbling concrete thanks to a passerby who called into the KHQ newsroom to report what they’d seen. There may be lane changes and road restrictions as repairs are made.

The 2nd Avenue ramp to Hamilton northbound was closed Jan. 10 until further notice.
