Play-Doh-Like Substance Offers Adhesive Alternative

For those who loved Play-Doh as a kid, a London-based designer has made a more adult-friendly version—one that doubles as an adhesive that can bond parts of furniture together.

Stephen Johnson, the designer behind the synthetic dough known as PLAY, said that the material can bond materials such as wood, marble, glass and metal together while retaining its fun, colorful appearance.

Dough Design

After attempting to use toy dough in his own furniture designs, to no avail, Johnson took it upon himself to develop his adhesive variant.

Prior to the designer’s creation, there were other, similar products already on the market, but many of them failed to replicate the popular characteristics of kid’s dough, noted Johnson, such as its silky texture.

Johnson strove to keep the core traits of the dough in his own creation, with the addition that PLAY cures incredibly hard.

After five years in development, PLAY is reportedly easy to mold, while also retaining an instant stick factor. Johnson said that he hopes his product will instill childlike creativity in other designers.

"It is about the innovative freedom we had as kids, being spontaneous, putting objects and materials together without restriction—designing in the moment with our hands, imagination and the things we have around us."

Material Use

To demonstrate PLAY’s flexibility and durability, Johnson created a range of tables with the material, squashing it into joints between surfaces and legs.

The designer also pressed the dough underneath the dome of a couple of pendant lights to add a layer of color, explaining that each piece was both “a multiple yet unique—a standardized product with a DNA of fingerprints, gestures and colors individual to each piece.”

As Johnson notes on his website, “Design should serve not only our physical needs, but our psychological needs too. Through materials and their related processes, my aim is to create products which inspire and captivate.”
