The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued a memo to businesses saying that it will continue to accept the 2016 OSHA Form 300A data via the Injury Tracking Application until the end of December—beyond last Friday's due date.

The notice, which was released Monday (Dec. 18), says that the agency will not take enforcement action against employers who submit injury reports after the Dec.15 deadline, but before the Dec. 31 final entry date. Starting January 1, 2018, the 2016 data will no longer be accepted.

Previous Plans and Recordkeeping Deadline

The Injury Tracking Application walks employers through a four-step process for reporting workplace illnesses and injuries per the Final Rule to Improve Tracking of Workplace Injuries and Illnesses, issued last year.

OSHA will continue to accept the 2016 OSHA Form 300A data via the Injury Tracking Application until the end of December.

The regulation was put into place in May 2016. It requires, among other provisions, that many employers submit workplace injury reports to OSHA electronically.

Security Breach

On Aug. 1, OSHA launched the application to help companies comply with its new electronic record-keeping rule.

In mid-August, OSHA’s online injury reporting system temporarily suspended operations as a result of a notice from the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security, which indicated that user information associated with the injury tracking application might have been compromised. Only one business’s information was reportedly impacted at the time.

The application was brought back online Oct. 20, with a deadline of Dec. 1. Soon after, however, the deadline was pushed to Dec. 15 to compensate for the security breach suspension.
