Late last week color company Pantone announced its 2018 Color of the Year: Ultra Violet.

“A dramatically provocative and thoughtful purple shade, Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet communicates originality, ingenuity, and visionary thinking that points us toward the future,” the company notes in its release.

Late last week color company Pantone announced its 2018 Color of the Year: Ultra Violet.

The color is a nod to a hue released in August, identified by Prince’s “Love Symbol #2,” to honor the late icon. In the Ultra Violet announcement, the company notes some of the connotations that can be found associated with the color purple.

“Enigmatic purples have also long been symbolic of counterculture, unconventionality, and artistic brilliance,” the company says. “Musical icons Prince, David Bowie, and Jimi Hendrix brought shades of Ultra Violet to the forefront of western pop culture as personal expressions of individuality. Nuanced and full of emotion, the depth of Pantone 18-3838 Ultra Violet symbolizes experimentation and non-conformity, spurring individuals to imagine their unique mark on the world, and push boundaries through creative outlets.”

The company released tool for multiple industries including packaging design, fashion, beauty and home interiors, and also notes that the mystical quality of the color purple can also be used to seek refuge “from today’s over-stimulated world”—a common thread in many color-of-the-year announcements going into 2018.

“The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today,” said Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute.

Along with the color choice, Pantone released eight different color palettes that feature Pantone, and within those palettes there are three different “color harmonies,” which show the company’s recommendation on difference variances of and levels of colors from those palettes.

The palettes include:

  • Purple Haze – a calm palette of hazy and smoky hues combines gray Tradewinds with various muted purples such as Misty Lilac and Lavender Violet.
  • Kindred Spirits – a playful and exuberant palette that combines the purple tints with pink such as Chateau Rose and Mulberry.
  • Drama Queen – is filled with both bright and elegant tones allowing a dramatic look from the palette, which includes both Bronze Mist and Pink Peacock.
  • Intrigue – back on the cooler side, aimed to invoke a sense of mystery, this collection includes both silver and gold tones with muted blues such as Xenon Blue.
  • Quietude – a palette of blushes brings back the calm theme with Peach Beige, Spanish Villa and Ruby Wine.
  • Attitude – conversely, perhaps the boldest palette released, this collection features a hue from nearly every color family including Hawaiian Surf, Butterum and Citrus.
  • Desert Sunset – emanating the colors found in its namesake, this palette includes bright neutrals, such as Copper, and pairs them with pinks and reds.
  • Floral Fantasies – the only pastel-dominant palette aims to mimic a summer garden with Yellow Iris, Lettuce Green and Cherry Blossom.
