DIY Painter Hits the Road

Some commuters get annoyed when a crew is out painting markings on the road and holding up traffic; late last month, a man in one China city got annoyed with traffic and decided to paint some new markings on the road.

According to media reports out of China, the 28-year-old man, identified only by the name Cai, took it upon himself to repaint the arrows in one lane of a busy intersection, so as to allow traffic to proceed straight ahead in a lane previously restricted to left turns.

Needless to say, it didn’t last long.

Cai was arrested and, according to reports, slapped with a fine (said to be equivalent to $150) for his creative work. Fortunately for the rest of us, his caper was caught on camera and has spread across the Internet.

His reasoning for the DIY traffic engineering? He reportedly told police he was tired of being stuck in a line of cars in the lanes marked for traffic going straight, and there was never anyone in the turn lanes.

Editor's note: This story was one of our most popular "Off the Wall" features of 2017, and appeared in our Readers' Choice issue on Dec. 29.
