A U.K. firm that conducts research and development work in the coatings field will be working with the University of Nottingham on a project to develop wear-resistant coatings for industrial environments using nanotechnology.

Monitor Coatings Ltd. (North Tyneside, England), a subsidiary of Castolin Eutectic, has received funding from the U.K.’s Innovation Agency to collaborate with Nottingham to develop new wear-resistant coatings using a compact high-velocity oxygen fuel system, a type of thermal spray process.

Monitor Coatings Ltd. will work with the University of Nottingham to develop new wear-resistant thermal spray coatings for continuous casting applications.

The research is aimed at replacing hard chrome plating in the application of continuous casting of metals, a process that creates a highly aggressive environment.

The project was borne of an economic issue: Profits have been down for U.K. steelmakers in recent years, and manufacturers are in search of ways to recoup profits by cutting production costs. Monitor predicts that the coating developed in the project will have a service life at least three times as long as current products, and will provide a considerable reduction in cost of producing billet continuous casting steel.

“We are thrilled to be working together with the University of Nottingham for the development of novel nanotechnology-based multicomponent thermal spray coating systems that are highly resistant to degradation due to wear,” said Monitor’s research and development manager, Spyros Kamnis.

"The University of Nottingham […] is the ideal partner to help us turn concepts into reality and tackle some of the major challenges facing the economy and the environment.”
