In the largest concrete pour in the history of the country, the construction of a pier base for a bridge in eastern China used a total of over 140,000 cubic feet of concrete, according to reports.

Concrete Pour

The Shanghai-Nantong combined bridge—a cable-stayed road-rail span—used 140,748 cubic feet of concrete in the construction of the pier base, with an area roughly the size of 12 basketball courts. A total of 7,420 tons of steel bars also used in the project.

The pour was broken down into two phases: 10 feet of the 29-foot-tall pier base concrete was poured first, followed by the last 19 feet. The second phase utilized around 91,000 cubic feet of concrete, setting the record for continuous concrete pour in volume in China's bridge construction history, noted Xinhua.

The record-setting endeavor took more than 400 workers working 100 hours, around the clock.

About the Bridge

The bridge itself is planned to be over 6.5 miles long, with four railway lines and six expressway lanes. The bridge’s main span will be 3,582 feet, also setting the record for the world’s largest span of a cable-stayed railway-expressway bridge.

Construction on the bridge project began in 2014, and will take more than five years to reach completion.

According to Global Construction Review, the bridge will be the easternmost crossing of the Yangtze River.

The China Railway Major Bridge Engineering Group Corporation is the company working on the project.
