With the traditional ritual of smashing a few guitars, Seminole Tribe leaders and Hard Rock International representatives recently marked the unveiling of the $1.5 billion expansion of the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino.

Located in Hollywood, Florida, the guitar-shaped hotel, which is slated to be part of a larger entertainment complex, will house 638 rooms and stand 450 feet tall.

Hard Rockin’ Hotel

The dream of the guitar-shaped hotel began in 2007 for CEO of Seminole Gaming and chairman of Hard Rock International James Allen, but the initial design by architects—a rectangular hotel with a glass facade in the front shaped like a guitar—was not what he’d envisioned.

“I said, ‘We are talking about a building that is actually shaped like a guitar,’” Allen said at the unveiling. “This is another time in my life when people thought I was certifiably crazy.”

Now, his dream will come to life, featuring blue glass windows, several lounges and a 41,000-square-foot spa, noted the Miami Herald. The expansion will boost the amount of rooms to 1,270.

According to the Architects' Newspaper, vertical fins up the midline of the hotel tower are designed to resemble strings, with horizontal banding appearing to be frets.

Expansion Design

The strikingly shaped building—which is designed to look like back-to-back guitars—is just one part of the expansion. Other components include a Hard Rock Casino that will boost the number of slot machines to 3,267, and will include more than 170 new table games and a new 18,000-square-foot poker room. The overall expansion will also house 60,000-square-feet of new retail and restaurant space, as well as a completely redesigned and rebuilt 7,000-seat Hard Rock Live venue.

Another key feature of the expansion is the 10-acre pool that will sit near the base of the hotel, which is slated to feature lagoon areas. The center of the pool complex, known as the “Bora Bora Experience,” features private villas equipped with butler service.

According to a news release from Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, Allen has been working with Las Vegas-based Klai Juba Wald Architects and other firms to bring the project to life. Other firms involved in the project include Rockwell Group and Wilson Associates, with Suffolk-Yates building the expansion itself.

The expansion is slated to open summer 2019, and will create 2,909 ongoing jobs and 9,936 construction jobs.

The Seminole Tribe of Florida acquired the Hard Rock company in 2006, to the tune of $965 million.
