A temporary pavilion made of old bedsprings was raised to act as an art installation and a home for other works, which are all part of the Dubai Design Week program.

Located in the Dubai Design District, the pavilion houses the Abwab exhibition, which features a collection of more than 40 designs from creators in the Middle East, north Africa and south Asia regions.

Abwab Pavilion

The Abwab exhibition—which means “doors” in Arabic—is enveloped by the bedspring pavilion designed by United Arab Emirates-based architecture firm Fahed + Architects. The firm was tasked with using material from the waste management company Bee’ah, with an emphasis on capturing a place's spiritual essence through architecture.

The architects said that, upon visiting the junkyard, they discovered many materials that were at the end of their intended life cycle.

“A mound of majestically laid coil springs from disposed bed mattresses allowing light and air to pass though, with absolutely no resistance, instantly beckoned,” they said.

The architects chose the springs as the material, because, when in mound form, the lightness, strength and silhouette were evocative of ocean waves.

According to Fahred + Architects, the bedsprings act as a coil mesh, “distilling daylight to reveal pattern on the exhibited works and the ground. Drawing upon the shapes of a cotton candy, coral cluster in a reef, waves in the ocean and clouds in the sky, the structural system illustrates a series of interconnected posts to support the clouds of mesh.”

The architects added that, with the structure being reminiscent of a cloud, it was intended to evoke a sense of hope.

Dubai Design Week

This year’s Design Week saw the housing of all 47 designs under one roof for the first time since the beginning of the program.

The exhibition featured eight categories: mimicry, interpretation, intersection, tactility, geometry, nostalgia, artisanal and re-use, and ran from Oct. 13-18 of this year. Dubai Design Week aims to highlight the city’s place on the world stage of design and creative industries.
