Covestro (Leverkusen, Germany) has announced the beginning of operations at a new production facility for aqueous polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) at its Dormagen, Germany, site.

In a move to increase production, the company has also announced plans to expand on operations in Barcelona. The company also plans to build a new facility in China and resume activities in the U.S.

In 2016, Covestro reported sales of $13 billion, making it one of the world’s largest polymer companies.

Covestro Move

Plans for expanding the company’s production capacities were inspired by increasing demand from the coating and adhesives sector, which entails the increased use of more sustainable waterborne systems to replace solvent-based systems. There has also been a recent push for regulations that require lower emissions of volatile organic compounds.

Covestro has announced the beginning of operations at a new production facility for aqueous polyurethane dispersions (PUDs) at its Dormagen, Germany, site.

"With these investments, we are preparing for the continued growing demand for polyurethane dispersions as well as expanding our globally leading position," says Michael Friede, global head of the Coatings, Adhesives, Specialties segment at Covestro. "At the same time, thanks to our diversified production, we have the flexibility to meet many different requirements."

According to Covestro, this diversity is the key to the strength of the company’s line of PUDs.

"Our custom-tailored products allow for many applications in very different industries," Friede explained. "In this way, we create opportunities for growth and strengthen our customers’ competitiveness."

The company provides technical services and support to customers on a global scale.

Company Product Applications

Covestro’s Bayhydrol UH, U and UV series and the Bayhytherm product are a component of base coats for OEM automotive and refinishing coatings, as well as wood, furniture and long-wearing floor coatings.

PUDs in the Baybond product line are used in the production of glass fiber sizings to produce robust plastic composites.
