Frost & Sullivan, a global business consulting firm, recognized I-Tech’s Selektope antifouling agent with its 2017 European Biocides Technology Innovation Award as parts of its 2017 Best Practices Awards, handed out Oct. 23 in London. The annual awards are meant to recognize companies across a variety of markets for their performance in areas such as leadership and technology.

About the Product

Selektope first came to market in 2015 and the first branded marine coating products to use the biorepellent was released by Chugoku Marine Paints in 2016, according to I-Tech. An organic nonmetal compound, Selektope is designed to repel barnacles from ships’ hulls by stimulating larvae’s swimming behavior. The compound stimulates octopamine receptors, causing the larvae to swim away from the surface; the stimulation is reversible and does no permanent damage to the organisms.

According to I-Tech, the formulation sharply reduces biocide loadings for antifouling coatings, enabling Selektope to be highly effective in terms of lowering fuel consumption, thereby cutting harmful emissions and conserving natural resources, even in minute quantities.

I-Tech says at least 150 ships have been coated with Selektope-containing products, either in newbuilding or as part of recoating projects.

International Honor

“I-Tech is honored that Selektope’s contribution to added performance in marine antifouling coatings is gaining increasing recognition due to its first-of-its-kind mode of action as a biocide and the impact it is having on the market,” said Philip Chaabane, CEO of I-Tech. “The Frost & Sullivan Award is an important acknowledgement that Selektope has established a recognized position in both the European biocides market and in the maritime industry.”

“Our Awards Ceremonies gather industry leaders to share their accomplishments and motivate each other to inspire continued success,” said Phil Howarth, Partner at Frost & Sullivan. “These companies are committed to shaping the future by innovating today. We are proud and excited to be part of their journey.”

Is Selektope a broad spectrum anti-foulant against micro and macro fouling, e.g., tube worms, barnacles, "marine slime" etc?
