Plans Revealed for Europe's First Underwater Restaurant

Europe will be getting its first underwater restaurant, slated to be featured in southern Norway and doing double duty as both fine dining and a research opportunity.

Designed by architecture firm Snøhetta, the restaurant will be known as “Under,” which takes on a double meaning in Norwegian; it can also be translated to mean "wonder." The design for the restaurant would have the building partially submerged into the sea to give diners a world-class view and researchers a chance to observe local marine life.

Under the Sea

The structure will consist of a concrete box that starts half above water, with the other half leaning down beneath the waves. The building’s rugged exterior will also encourage the mussels to cling onto its surface, which will, in time, the researchers hope, turn into a functional mussel reef that purifies the water and attracts more fauna.

The underwater portion features seating for 100 diners, as well as a 36-foot-wide acrylic panoramic window that provides a view into the water, 17 feet under the surface.

"More than an aquarium, the structure will become a part of its marine environment, coming to rest directly on the sea bed 5 meters below the water's surface,” Snøhetta says on its website.

“With meter-thick concrete walls, the structure is built to withstand pressure and shock from the rugged sea conditions. Like a sunken periscope, the restaurant’s massive acrylic windows offer a view of the seabed as it changes throughout the seasons and varying weather conditions.”

The marine research center to be included within the restaurant will allow for the investigation into the behavior of fish, which includes sound signal training and how fish behavior differs with the seasons.

Under’s entrance will consist of a huge frame-like oak wall, which will lead down to the similarly wood-lined dining area.

Reminiscent of the surrounding waters, the restaurant will be painted in shades of blue and green. The champagne bar will feature more subdued tones evocative of shells and sand.
