On Friday (Oct. 20), the rehabilitation of the Henry Hudson Bridge began, which involves the removal of columns and toll islands in the hopes that traffic will flow more smoothly.

In the project, which is slated to take 19 months, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority is working to rehabilitate the upper and lower roadways of the bridge, according to News 12.

The work that began this past Friday involves the closure of one northbound lane from the Dyckman Street entrance up to the location of the former toll plaza, which will be followed closely by a traffic pattern change in November on the lower southbound level that also requires a lane closure. This leaves two lanes in each direction open for traffic.

During this period, the lower level pedestrian walkway will be closed, and a free shuttle service running from March to December will carry pedestrians and cyclists.

The project also involves the removal of columns and toll islands from the old toll plaza, which will allow for a smoother ride across the bridge, authorities hope.

The Henry Hudson Bridge connects Manhattan to the Bronx, and was built in 1936. At the time of its opening, according to the MTA, it was the longest plate girder arch and fixed arch bridge in the world. The structure was only built with one level initially, but the design accommodated the construction of a second level if needed.

The project is slated for completion in January 2018, costing $86 million.
