The American Concrete Institute recently announced the winners of the 2017 Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards, with the highest honor being presented to R·torso·C, located in Tokyo.

According to ACI, this award is given to a project that exemplifies excellence in concrete innovation, and what makes this particular entry stand above the others is its creative use of a small space, building upward and accounting for every square foot.

Tokyo Home

The home, located in the heart of Tokyo and sitting on an area of 712 square feet, was designed and built with the potential of upward mobility—reaching toward the sky—in mind. In order to achieve this feeling, the design team working on the project pruned away the corner of the rectangular volume of the space. Paradoxically, this treatment of the space created a sense of openness for the four-story home.

On Monday, the American Concrete Institute announced the winners of the 2017 Excellence in Concrete Construction Awards, with the highest honor being presented to R·torso·C, located in Tokyo.

Large openings facing the sky also contribute to the feeling of openness, noted ACI. Chamfered corners provide both a view for those inside looking out, and vice versa.

The basement houses a sound-insulated audiovisual room, and a gallery and a Japanese room reside on the first floor. For the second level of the home, functionality comes into play with the presence of living room, dining room, kitchen and bathroom.

The living room was created to be small, featuring a 16-foot-high ceiling and an oblique triangular window, which expands the sense of space.

The final design of the home was drawn from a number of three-dimensional models.

Other Awards

In order to be eligible for winning an Excellence in Concrete Construction Award, projects need to be winners at a local ACI chapter level, and then submitted by that chapter, or chosen by one of the Institute’s international partners.

The vetting process involved an expert panel of judges assessing each project based on architectural and engineering merit, creativity, innovative construction techniques and use of materials, ingenuity, sustainability and resilience, and functionality.
