A new project using LEGO bricks to repair masonry in public spaces has ignited the imaginations of people across the globe, and it all began with a single artist.

Jan Vorrmann, who has been using LEGO bricks in repairing capacities for a decade, has launched the project Dispatchwork, and began implementing this idea Bocchignano, Italy, and has since expanded to Berlin and Tel Aviv.

Reclaiming Public Spaces

Vormann’s handiwork can be seen in over 40 cities across Europe. Some installations are only comprised of a handful of blocks, while others consist of 20-pound chunks of LEGO bricks.

The artist intends for Dispatchwork to serve as a way to reclaim public spaces by interweaving fun into a visible place. Others who also share Vormann’s sense of fun have contributed to the project with their own efforts. This spirit of community also shows in the mission statement for the project.

“Dispatchwork aims at childhood memories in abstract shapes and vivid colors, towards a global collaboration of persons unknown to each other,” Dispatchwork’s website reads.

“This project is made for all those who identify as one of the others and embrace transitoriness. Persons who like to share their time playfully and don’t mind when the unglued structures slowly ‘dissolve’ (friendly to our environment) back into kids' toyboxes.”

The mission statement emphasizes that the project is a forum to develop a game across the globe.

A map of current installations can be seen on the project’s website.
