A construction worker was killed Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 11) while doing work at the Cleveland State University campus, officials say.

According to reports, 56-year-old Joseph Matulis was working at a project when a “piece of material” fell on top of him.

The incident occurred around 2 p.m., according to the Gilbane Building Company (Providence, Rhode Island). Spokesperson Wes Cotter said that emergency crews were called to the scene and attempted to give Matulis medical treatment, but he died at the scene.

Matulis was reportedly a pipe fitter working as a subcontractor under the company, which expressed sympathies to his family.

Both Cleveland police and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the incident. According to OSHA’s online database, Gilbane Building Company does not have any violations on record over of the past five years.
