Contractors Sought for Francis Scott Key Bridge Recoat

The Maryland Transportation Authority is seeking contractors for the cleaning and coating of approach spans on the Francis Scott Key Bridge located in Baltimore, Maryland.

Bids are due Nov. 9.

Scope of Work

The project includes cleaning and coating of approach spans and structural steel on the Francis Scott Key Bridge, which first opened in 1977. The dual-span drawbridge and approaches reach a total of 10.9 miles in length.

The Maryland Transportation Authority is seeking contractors for the cleaning and coating of approach spans on the Francis Scott Key Bridge located in Baltimore, Maryland.

Contractors will oversee preparation and coating of bearing areas and structural steel members. The steel will require abrasive blast-cleaning to a Near White (SSPC-SP 10) finish and coating with the MDSHA System C, which consists of an organic zinc-rich primer, an epoxy intermediate and a urethane finish. Owner-approved manufacturers for structural steel liquid coatings include Baril Coatings, Carboline, International Protective Coatings, M.A. Bruder & Sons, PPG, Sherwin-Williams, Simpson Strong-Tie, Tnemec and Wasser.

The project also includes 4,690 square feet of protective coating application on concrete surfaces.

The existing coatings contain lead. Class 1A containment according to SSPC-Guide 6 is required. SSPC-QP 1 and QP 2 certifications are also required. MDSHA personnel will perform coatings inspections services.
