OSHA Announces Harwood Training Grant Recipients

The Occupational Health and Safety administration has awarded $10.5 million in grants for federal health and safety training to 80 nonprofits across the country for the 2017 fiscal year.

The funding, which comes from the Susan Harwood Training Grants program, is geared toward providing education to help both employees and employers address and remedy workplace hazards. This year’s health and safety topics, designated by OSHA, include chemical, electrical, excavation and grain handling hazards, fall prevention in the construction industry, and machinery and machine guarding hazards.

The Occupational Health and Safety administration has awarded $10.5 million in grants for federal health and safety training to 80 nonprofits across the country for fiscal 2017.

Recipients included nonprofit organizations such as community and faith-based groups, employer associations, unions, joint labor-management associations, as well as colleges and universities.

Harwood Grant Awards

Four groups that fall under the Construction Road Zone category will receive over $500,000 total toward educating workers and businesses about working in construction zones and the associated hazards. In a similar vein, 18 groups will receive over $1.5 million in funding toward fall prevention in construction training.

Under the combined topic of chemical hazards and hazard communications, 18 groups will receive $2.2 million in funding for chemical hazards and communication training for workers in a variety of fields, including those working in the maritime industry.

As for the machine and machine guarding category, nine groups are slated to receive $1.1 million in total grants for educating workers on proper machine guarding methods.
