A South Africa-based cement and additives manufacturer has released a new product meant to make concrete glow, opening the door to innovations like self-lit bicycle paths.

LuminTech, from Chryso Southern Africa, features a variety of different luminescent particles that the company says are applied to the surface and incorporated into the concrete. Those particles absorb UV radiation during the day and release the energy at night, allowing the particles—and the thereby the concrete—to glow.

LuminTech features a variety of different luminescent particles that the company says are applied to the surface and incorporated into the concrete. Those particles absorb UV radiation during the day and release the energy at night, allowing the particles—and the thereby the concrete—to glow.

“The innovative technology can be used to illuminate and enhance the architectural lines of an urban building at night, or highlight a domestic terrace or garden pathway, or the edges of a swimming pool,” said Michelle Fick, Executive Relationship and Project Manager for the Chryso Southern Africa Group. The company also says it could be used for applications such as illuminated bike paths, reducing the need for electric lighting.

“The intensity of the illumination depends on the volume of particles scattered on the concrete skin. Available in four colors, the particles are ideal for outdoor use as they are not epoxy-based.”

According to the company, the glow is visible for more than 10 hours after dark and is composed of composite recycled material and natural mineral pigments.

LuminTech is recommended for use on exposed aggregate concrete, the company says. It can also be applied to polished concrete surfaces, however.

Fick adds, “The new product’s technology meets several French and European standards and strongly resists impact and friction. It is also not affected by freeze-thaw cycles.”
