A number of coating- and adhesive-related developments from manufacturers and labs large and small are finalists in this year’s R&D 100, an annual awards program presented by R&D Magazine at its R&D 100 Conference, to be held in November.

The coating finalists range from raw materials and coating components to powder coating systems and construction adhesives. A selection of finalists of note to the industrial and protective coatings industry follows.

Dow: Road Paint Resin

The Dow Chemical Company (now part of DowDuPont) and its subsidiary businesses made the list of finalists a number of times for raw materials advances and other novel products.

Dow technologies on the R&D 100 finalists list include a resin for waterborne pavement marking paints.

Dow Coating Materials’ Fastrack 5408 resin, an acrylic binder for waterborne pavement markings, is featured; Dow says the resin helps increase durability and allows for application of waterborne road paints during an extended season. The product was previously recognized with an Innovation Award from the American Traffic Safety Services Association.

Other Dow products on the list of finalists include the company’s Betaseal 16709 Glass Bonding Adhesive, for automotive manufacturers. A total of 20 Dow technologies made the list.

PPG: Powder Coatings, Adhesive

PPG Industries also made the finalist list a number of times, for powder coatings products, automotive coatings and adhesives, and an innovative construction adhesive.

Coatings innovations from PPG that are up for honors include Envirocron Extreme Protection, a chip- and corrosion-resistant powder coating designed to protect the coil springs in automotive suspension systems. According to PPG, the coating was developed in response to stricter cyclic corrosion standards established by a major automaker for these particular parts.

Other automotive-sector coatings on the list from PPG are: Audioguard for Aluminum, a sprayable sound-dampening coating for aluminum auto parts; and the company’s compact process primer, part of the company’s compact paint process for automotive OEMs.

Also on the list is Liquid Nails Fuze-It All Surface, a construction adhesive product released last year by PPG brand Liquid Nails. Recommended for many surfaces, from concrete to glass and tile, the product offers instant bond and instant water resistance, according to the company.

Nanotechnology

General Motors and Forge Nano made the list of finalists as codevelopers of ultrathin multifunctional hybrid coatings and processes. Forge Nano, formerly known as PneumatiCoat Technologies, specializes in nanocoatings and atomic film deposition, serving functions from corrosion resistance to electrical insulation or conduction.

Rust-Oleum is on the finalists list for its MetaPrime self-healing primer for metal substrates.

Autonomic Materials Inc., a firm dedicated to self-healing solutions for coatings and other materials, made the finalist list for its self-healing additives for powder coatings. AMI, a spinoff of the University Illinois, has developed additives for waterborne, solvent-borne and powder coatings, designed to self-repair at the micron scale. The company markets the technology for use in hard-to-maintain areas on infrastructure, machinery, aerospace and other structures.

Rust-Oleum, owned by RPM Group, is listed for its MetaPrime, a self-healing epoxy primer made for metal substrates. According to the company, MetaPrime maintains adhesion even after damage, and exhibits corrosion resistance.

Conference Details

The R&D 100 Conference will be held Nov. 16-17 at Walt Disney Swan Resort, in Orlando, Florida. The final list of 100 honorees in the categories of Analytical/Test, IT/Electrical, Mechanical Devices/Materials, Process/Prototyping and Software/Services will be announced at a dinner Nov. 17. There will also be special awards for Market Disruptor Services, Market Disruptor Products, Corporate Social Responsibility and Green Tech.
