There's a new "Monopoly" in the coatings industry, but it's not one the Federal Trade Commission will need to investigate. They can't be blamed if they want to play along, though: The most beloved and iconic board game in the world, Monopoly, has been customized for the industrial coatings industry.

JPCL has teamed up with Hasbro for a special industrial coatings-specific edition of the classic board game Monopoly.

The Journal of Protective Coatings and Linings and Hasbro have teamed up to create the JPCL Special Edition Industrial Coatings Monopoly game. The traditional board game has been entirely customized for the industrial and protective coatings industry (aside from the “four corners” and the houses and hotels, all trademark protected).

Gone are the traditional property names like Boardwalk, Marvin Gardens and Illinois Avenue. The properties now feature industry companies that supported the project, including The Sherwin-Williams Company, PPG, Carboline, Covestro, Thomas Industrial Coatings and SSPC: The Society for Protective Coatings. The four railroad properties are now projects: Bridge & Highway, Water Storage, Marine and Oil & Gas.

Additionally, the "Chance" and "Community Chest" cards are now "Surface Prep" and "Application" cards and feature customized industry text. The game tokens have also been customized for the industry and feature a Sherwin-Williams paint can, a Clemco blast pot, a HoldTight 102 bucket, a Brand Safway scaffold, an SSPC membership pin and an issue of JPCL. The currency has been changed from dollars to buckets of paint, and all graphics have been dynamically designed to reflect the industry.

Fun and Educational

“We wanted to do something to celebrate and promote the industry,” said Brion Palmer, CEO of Technology Publishing Co., publisher of JPCL. "The work the industry does is vital and impacts the entire population. This contribution deserves to be recognized.”

The JPCL Special Edition Industrial Coatings Monopoly game can also help address another key industry challengedeveloping the next generation of industry professionals.

“The game is a fun, interactive, family-oriented way to educate and demonstrate the importance of our industry and to inspire young people to think about it as a career choice,” Palmer added.

The game is a great gift idea for any industrial coatings professional, for clients, prospects, colleagues, industry peers, friends and family members. There is a limited number of copies available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The JPCL Special Edition Industrial Coatings Monopoly game can be purchased online at A 10 percent discount is available for orders placed before Aug. 31; simply use the promo code MONOTEN when ordering. Games will ship Sept. 1.
