Durability + Design is set to launch its inaugural Material Selection Conference, a one-day seminar on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at the Hyatt Regency Pittsburgh International Airport in Pittsburgh. Be sure to register here.

With four workshop sessions and two discussion panels, the conference will feature several professionals in the field who will be helping owners, architects, contractors and coating manufacturers to determine the effect of coating system and liquid-applied air barrier design on building performance, with a focus on the capability of coatings to manage moisture intrusion into exterior walls, and of liquid-applied air barriers to limit heat, air, and moisture transport through walls.

Kevin Brown, of KTA-Tator Inc., is presenting the second session of the day, “The Effect of Permeance on Exterior Wall Coating Performance.”

About Kevin Brown

As technical director for the commercial services group of KTA-Tator Inc., Brown develops and implements maintenance programs for commercial clients with architectural/commercial problems related to paint failures.

He holds a CXLT (Certified XL Tribometrist), NACE Level 2 Coating Inspector certification and RRO (Registered Roof Observer) certification, as well as a BS and MBA from Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, North Carolina.

Brown has more than 15 years of experience in the field of retail facility management, overseeing building maintenance and preventative maintenance programs for more than 1,700 stores, including store repaints, floor coating replacement, and long-range budget planning.

In “The Effect of Permeance on Exterior Wall Coating Performance,” Brown will address the value of thermo-dynamic modelling when specifying coatings for building walls. He will present the results of thermo-dynamic modelling of five identical buildings in five parts of the country to explore how many times a building can be repainted before a reduction in breathability may cause problems.
