Ceiling Collapses Amidst $2M Reno on Park Avenue

A ceiling collapsed Saturday morning (Aug. 5) during a $2 million renovation in a Park Avenue co-op, according to reports.

Work was being done to the Manhattan plaza on the bottom floor of the 30-story, 106-unit luxury building known as The Carlton Park. Last week, workers installed a concrete board and stucco drop ceiling, according to the New York Post.

“The concrete board was evidently too heavy,” said resident Malcolm Karlin. “Evidently something went wrong. It just couldn’t hold. It all came down around 9:30."

One person, who was not identified, suffered minor injuries and was treated at Lenox Hill Hospital.

Plans & Permits

The Landmarks Preservation Commission and Department of City Planning approved plans submitted by Hariri & Hariri Architecture for the renovation of the plaza in June 2016, which included opening up the corner space of the plaza, sloping down to the sidewalk and adding seating.

Since the incident, the Department of Buildings has ordered a Partial Stop Work Order on the property pending an inspection of the site’s stability.

There is also an open “work without a permit” violation on the property, according to DOB records.

An Occupational Safety and Health Administration representative told D+D News that, as of Wednesday (Aug. 9), the agency is not investigating the incident as a potential workplace safety violation.
