The Sherwin-Williams Company (Cleveland) has launched a new water-based floor coating out of its Protective & Marine Coatings unit that’s designed to resist hot-tire pickup.

The AquArmor WBU Water-Based Urethane Floor Coatings will perform on both walls and floors, the company says, and aims to deliver high-performance application and aesthetic that rivals solvent-based products, in addition to having lower VOC levels.

The line comes in two finishes—a gloss sheen and a satin sheen—and the wet-edge application helps to minimize the potential for roller lap marks, the company notes.

The AquArmor WBU Water-Based Urethane Floor Coatings will perform on both walls and floors, the company says, and aims to deliver high-performance application and aesthetic that rivals solvent-based products, in addition to having lower VOC levels.

In addition to preventing tire marks and stains, the products also offer chemical resistance, which will help boost the aesthetic for clients in high-traffic areas, such as automotive dealership showrooms, aircraft hangars, food and beverage facilities, warehouses, pharmaceutical processing facilities and light manufacturing areas, Sherwin says.

“Most flooring systems used for auto dealerships, aircraft hangars and warehouses are solvent-based, as any water-based alternatives have not met the performance standards of those systems. With AquArmor WBU Water-Based Urethane Floor Coatings, that all changes,” said Casey Ball, marketing director—Resinous Flooring, Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine Coatings.

“They minimize excessive, permanent stains from hot tires, eliminating the need for dealerships or hangars, for example, to park vehicles on mats.”

Both finishes have an 18-hour intercoat adhesion, which the company says will help clients with project scheduling. The coatings also have a short dry time, and the company recommends foot traffic at 18 hours, light traffic at 24 hours and wheeled traffic at 48 hours after application.

The gloss sheen is available in clear, 10 colors and two tint bases, while the satin is only available in clear. Sherwin notes that applicators can also create a more durable finish by adding GP5240 aluminum oxide to either finish.
