Three construction workers were injured last Wednesday (July 26) while pouring concrete in a West Virginia parking garage when the area they were working in collapsed.

Shortly after 9 a.m. that morning, workers from Carl Walker Construction Inc. (Pittsburgh) were pouring concrete for deck repairs at the Charleston Area Medical Center Memorial Hospital, in Kanawha City, West Virginia, when the section they were working on collapsed.

Two men fell through the floor, according to initial reports, with one suffering from a minor shoulder injury. A woman also working on the site, who did not fall through the floor, sustained a minor abdominal injury. All three workers were taken to the nearby emergency room for treatment.

Dale Witte, spokesperson for the CAMC, noted that repairs on the facility’s parking garage had been ongoing for several months and the area was secured from hospital employees.

Joe White, vice president of waterproofing and restoration at Carl Walker Construction, confirmed to Durability + Design News that the crews had already made similar repairs to other parts of the structure.

On Wednesday, the crew was pouring a 3-inch slab in an 8-foot by 25-foot space, where the supporting beam was in a “unique position,” White said.

Prentice Cline, director for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s Charleston office, confirmed that the agency has opened an investigation on the incident.

The construction firm only has one general requirement violation on record with OSHA in the last five years, which stemmed from a complaint and did not result in any fines.
