OSHA is offering a total of $10.5 million this year to nonprofits such as labor organizations, employer associations and universities for the creation and administration of worker-safety training programs.

The grants, part of a program established in 1978 and renamed for former OSHA Office of Risk Assessment director Susan Harwood in 1997, provide money for nonprofits to create and administer hands-on safety training programs for workers across all industries. Groups eligible for grants include community and faith-based organizations, employer associations, labor unions, labor-management associations, Native American tribes and universities.

The programs funded focus on workers in small businesses, high-risk industries, and vulnerable workers who are underserved, have limited English proficiency or are temporary workers.

Last Year's Grants

Recipients of Harwood grants last year included the Building Industry Association (for injury prevention training for construction workers); the State Building and Construction Trades Council of CA (for training related to silica exposure); and the Port of San Diego Ship Repair Association, for shipyard hazards safety train-the-trainer and worker-training programs.

Applications for Harwood grants are due by 11:59 p.m. EDT, Aug. 28. More information is available at the Susan Harwood Training Grants website.
