PPG (Pittsburgh) recently announced two new additions to its direct-to-metal coating lines—Kwikspar 600 and Kwikspar 600SG.

Both coatings are corrosion resistant, and formulated with advanced film-build and fast-cure traits to improve application in both field and shop environments.

According to PPG, in highly corrosive environments, the full-gloss option (Kwikspar 600) and the semi-gloss option (Kwikspart 600SG) can be used as an overcoat on top of the company's Amercoat 370 or Sigmafast 278 epoxy primers. This provides a fast-drying alternative to traditional corrosion protection, which usually involves three coats. In less corrosive environments, one coat of Kwikspar 600 or 600SG can be a replacement for a traditional two-coat epoxy/urethane system.

Both coatings are corrosion resistant, and formulated with advanced film-build and fast-cure traits to improve application in both field and shop environments.

According to Diane Kappas, vice president of PPG Protective and Marine Coatings, the technology behind these polyaspartic coatings is a cost-effective option for steel building as well as structural components. These elements require excellent corrosion resistance, weathering, and gloss and color retention.

“When Kwikspar coatings are applied to steel in the shop, their ability to cure quickly accelerates production of finished parts,” Kappas said. “When applied in the field for maintenance or new construction projects, they have high film build, which enables applicators to achieve a desired finish more quickly. The coatings also can be applied directly to steel. The result is an exclusive combination of benefits that helps owners and contractors save time, labor and material cost, and return their assets to service quickly.”

Kwikspar coatings are formulated from 73 percent solids, and are able to cure up to eight times faster than other polyurethane coatings at a thickness of 4 mils. on a low-temperature substrate. The company also noted that the coatings are flexible, durable and can resist abrasion.
